A few months before the great pirate Blackbeard died, his prized flagship — the Queen Anne’s Revenge — ran aground and sank off the coast of North Carolina. For the past 20 years, a federal archaeologist named Linda Carnes-McNaughton (B.A. ’75) has been analyzing the artifacts found aboard — 400,000 and counting — since the ship’s rediscovery in 1996.

On the 300th anniversary of Blackbeard’s death, we’ll take you beneath the waves for the captivating story of the Americas’ most notorious pirate — and what he left behind on the ship that made him a legend.

In “Transaction Alley,” you’ll also read about one of Atlanta’s top industries — “fintech,” which is disrupting the financial services sector — and find out how Georgia State is working to ensure the city continues to dominate this thriving business.

Heard of Bitcoin? Ever thought about dabbling? You’ll want to meet two alumni who made themselves independently wealthy by investing in the strange market. Check out their story in “Winning With Cryptocurrency.” (They’d like to let you in on their secret.)

You won’t receive a print edition this winter, so be sure to check out these exclusive stories online.
