Years after they first set foot on campus, graduates Sloan Hayes and Mai Duong are back downtown with an eye toward their futures.

In this issue of the Georgia State Magazine, read about Hayes — who found fame as a rock musician in the 1970s — and his pursuit of a master’s degree in teaching nearly 50 years after he first came to Georgia State. You can also find out why Duong chose the downtown campus as the location for her first venture into the restaurant business. And see how university researchers are working to mitigate the effects of rotavirus infection using the body’s own defenses. Check out these stories and more in our digital-only winter issue.

And what about you? Got a promotion? A new addition to the family? We want to hear what you’re up to! Post your good news and read about your fellow alumni here in our Class Notes.

Sloan Hayes plays the keys with Brother Bait at an informal dedication of Georgia State's Library Plaza in 1971.
After leaving school in the early 1970s, Sloan Hayes (B.A. ’17) soon found rock stardom with the group Starbuck. The band had a No. 3 hit with “Moonlight Feels Right” in 1976 and toured the country with rock royalty of the day but broke up by the end of the decade. Now in his fifth stint at Georgia State, Hayes is working toward a master’s degree with plans to use his life’s experiences — onstage and off — to inform a new career as a high school history teacher in his hometown.

Downtown Fare

After being introduced to vegetarian cuisine as a Georgia State student, Mai Duong (B.A.S. '08) is bringing her take on authentic Vietnamese dining to downtown Atlanta as the chef and co-owner of the new Pho King Express on Park Place. Duong learned to cook from her family, which fled to the U.S. when she was 13, and later honed her skills preparing meals for members of the Buddhist temple she joined in 2009. When choosing a location for her own restaurant, Duong knew she wanted to serve her "second home" at Georgia State.

Radical Remedy

Researchers at Georgia State's Institute for Biomedical Sciences have established a link between bacteria found in the gut and resistance to the deadly disease known as rotavirus, which kills more than 200,000 children around the world each year. Find out how professor Andrew Gewirtz and his colleagues were able to use the bacteria to make mice resistant to rotavirus in a study that may shed light on why the disease affects some populations more than others.
