Ten Essential SEO Content Writing Tips

Writing is as much as an art form as it is a skill, but that doesn't mean that you can't write content that is powerful and helps to improve your company's ranking with the major search engines. There are certain elements which can help your website content, blog posts, articles submitted to online directories and other online content increase your rankings and move your business forward. Here are ten things to look for:

1. Content Matters: No matter what you write, keep in mind that it has the potential to reach a large audience and be beneficial to your company beyond any SEO benefits. Blogs, articles and on-site content are a chance to link your company to useful, interesting information about your industry. Well-written copy about intriguing topics is also more likely to be linked and shared by outsiders -- increasing your page rank as well.

2. Write Compelling Headings: The titles of your articles and webpages are important -- they are among the first things that can grab the reader's attention. Instead of using a boring, generic heading, make sure that your heading is interesting while clearly explaining the content. Working a keyword into the heading is also a good idea.

3. Stay on Topic: It's easy to write around a topic and begin drifting into tangents that are unrelated to your topic. Keep in mind that this is business writing and not a personal blog! While it's OK to have some personality in your writing, your focus should always be on the topic you are writing about.

4. Ideal Keyword Length and Density: For website content and off-site articles for directory submission, content could be 300 to 1,000 words in length. The length of your article will largely be determined by the number of keywords you are using: you should use a keyword for every 50 to 100 words of content.

5. Don't Stack Keywords: Some people cram all of their articles' keywords into one section at the beginning of the article - often as part of a list. This looks unprofessional since all of your linked keywords will be running together on the page. Spread your keywords evenly throughout the article so they look more organic.

6. Add Keywords to the Bio: Whether you are writing a story for a magazine or submitting an article to an online directory, there will be an opportunity for you to add your biographical information. This is valuable real estate and another chance for optimization. Make sure that you include one keyword in your bio.

7. Write and Tag Hierarchically: Using the appropriate tags for your content will show Google and other search engines that it is professional and well-structured, leading to higher placements. Make sure you use the h1 tag for titles and the h2 tag for subheadings, etc. You should also apply this concept to your writing, putting the most compelling information up front.

8. Use META Descriptions: Making sure that your articles have META descriptions -- 150 character descriptions of the content -- that have keywords included. Including META descriptions is a great way to get Google to recognize your content and give it greater value.

9. Write Original Content: Search engines will punish sites that publish duplicate content that already exists online. Make sure that your content is fresh and original instead of just "copying and pasting" content from existing sources.

10. Choose Relevant Images: Having eye-catching images that are relevant to your content will grab the reader's attention. You can use Creative Commons search tools like the one found at http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/creative-commons-image-search.htm to find intriguing images that are free to use without risking copyright infringement.

Google Caffeine Now Live

Google's new web indexing system Caffeine is now live. According to a company blog post, Google built the new search indexing system over a year ago to keep up with the evolution of the Web and to meet rising user expectations. Caffeine offers 50 percent fresher results for web searches than Google's last index and boasts the largest collection of web content the company has ever offered.

In comparison to the old index, Caffeine allows Google to index web pages on a much larger scale, making it possible for users to find new pages or information faster than before. The old index, which was comprised of several layers, refreshed at a much slower rate than Caffeine because Google would have to analyze the entire web before a page could be made available to the searcher. With Caffeine, Google is able to analyze the web in small portions and update the search index on a regular basis.

According to the announcement, "Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day."

What does this mean for searches and content owners? Vanessa Fox of Search Engine Land writes, "Caffeine is a revamp of Google's indexing infrastructure. It is not a change to Google's ranking algorithms."

Yahoo! Launches Facebook Features

As part of last year's partnership with Facebook, Yahoo! announced new features this month that will allow users of both networks to link their accounts and view and share updates.

According to Yahoo!, people who use both Yahoo! and Facebook will now have access to the Facebook News Feed on the Yahoo! homepage, in Yahoo! Mail and other Yahoo! sites and services.

In addition, people who create and share information on Yahoo! sites (including Yahoo! News, Flickr and Yahoo! Movies) can now share content with friends on Facebook.

"From news to sports to entertainment, Yahoo! sites provide ideal experiences to share with friends," said Ethan Beard, director of the Facebook Developer Network. "By integrating with Facebook on a global scale, Yahoo! is building upon an already valuable brand to give people easy ways to share the content they enjoy on Yahoo! with their friends on Facebook."

British Petroleum Buys Search Terms Relating to Oil Leak

While British Petroleum is currently battling a massive oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico from one of its exploratory drilling expeditions, it is also engaging in another damage control effort - one to protect its reputation. ABC News reports that BP has attempted to control the flow of negative publicity online by loosening its purse strings, as it has spent heavily to purchase top placements on search engines such as Google and Yahoo! for keyword phrases related to the environmental disaster.

For example, a person doing a search for the phrase "oil spill" on Google will receive thousands of links to news articles about the Gulf Coast crisis, but the first link returned is to BP's corporate page with highlighted text inviting people to "learn more about how BP is helping."

"We have bought search terms on search engines like Google to make it easier for people to find out more about our efforts in the Gulf and make it easier for people to find key links to information on filing claims, reporting oil on the beach and signing up to volunteer," BP spokesman Toby Odone told ABC News.

The move could backfire if people feel as though BP is attempting to manipulate the public by spending money on search engine results rather than on the clean-up. However, Kevin Ryan, the CEO of California-based Motivity Marketing, said that most people are unaware of the differences between organic search results and those that are the result of paid advertising.

Google to Roll Out Music Service Tied to Search Engine

Google is attempting to tie everything else to its industry-leading search engine, so why not music? The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Google will roll out a music download service later this year that is tied to its search engine, with an online subscription service coming in 2011.

Google declined to comment on the report, and it's unclear if Google has struck any deals with major record labels yet. However, the ubiquity of the Google search engine along with the rise in popularity of the Android mobile operating system means that record labels will likely want to listen when Google approaches them for partnerships.

In the past year, Google has already partnered with music content Web sites like iLike and Pandora, linking them through their search by letting users stream songs from the sites based on search results. Google's music service is the next logical step in this process, by eliminating the middleman and having Google deliver the music directly.

Top 10 Reasons to Use Social Media for Business

Research published by analyst firm Access Markets International Partners shows that almost 70 percent of small and medium businesses actively use social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to promote their companies. But simply posting what your CEO had for lunch isn't going to do much to help move your business forward. Smart companies are tactically using social media tools to increase their exposure to potential customers.

We've compiled ten of the most compelling reasons that you should consider using social media tools to promote your business.

1- Brand Recognition: Using social media allows your company to reach the highest number of potential customers possible. Getting your name out there is incredibly important - studies have suggested that customers need to hear a company's name at least seven times before they will gain the trust and respect needed to become a customer.

2- Brand Monitoring: Having a social media presence allows you to better understand what current and potential customers are saying about your product or services. Through active social media monitoring, you have the opportunity to address negative comments and correct false or inaccurate information about your brand.

3- Be Forward-Thinking: Your target audience is becoming savvier when it comes to the using social media sites in their daily lives. If you want to appear relevant and in-step with the latest advances in technology, your potential customers will want to see you on these sites as well.

4- Find New Customers Through Friends: You shouldn't neglect your personal social media accounts as potential avenues to promote the activities of your business. Posting regular updates relating to your business and activities can remind your friends of what your company does and either to use your services or refer one of their friends.

5- Find New Customers Through a Company Profile: Your company profile is a great opportunity for you to post regular updates on your activities, but also about important news and trends in your industry. This will catch the attention of new customers interested in your industry and increase your reputation as an expert in the field. It's critical to post regularly if you want to increase your followers or fans and convert them to potential leads.

6- Generate Site Traffic: By updating regularly on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn with posts that link back to your site, you can create additional traffic to your site. Social media bookmarking tools like Digg, Stumbleupon and Slashdot can also generate additional traffic to your site if you create frequent articles and blog posts.

7- Links for SEO: Many social media bookmarking sites use NOFOLLOW tags that limit the outbound link value of posts made on their sites. There are still many leading social media sites that allow DOFOLLOW tags including Slashdot, Digg, Furl, Mixx and FriendFeed. However, you can see benefits from posting to social media bookmarking sites that use NOFOLLOW tags if people read your posts and link back to your Website.

8- Increased Search Engine Rankings: Social media profiles frequently rank highly with major search engines. Using brand names and keywords in your profiles can help you to generate traffic for your social media sites and company homepage.

9- Integrated Social Media Results in Search Engines: Search engines like Google and Microsoft Bing are increasingly interested in indexing and ranking posts and other information from social media sites. Videos from popular Internet sites like YouTube can also be optimized for indexing by the major search engines.

10- Niche Marketing: Social media allows you to reach very specific subsets of individuals based on their personal preferences and interests. You can create social media strategies based on reaching individual interests or even create unique social media profiles to target these audiences.

Visibility Magazine Publishes Submit Express CEO Pierre Zarokian's "Top 10 Twitter Tools"

Whether you are a new Twitter user or someone who has been active on the site for a long time, there are a wide variety of tools available to help you get more followers, organize your Tweets and more effectively communicate with other people. These tools are especially important in business settings, where the ability to manage a high volume of posts and Twitter followers can make the difference between a successful social media campaign and a mess.

So how do you decide which tools are valuable? Submit Express CEO Pierre Zarokian has brought it all together for you. He recently put together a list of the "Top 10 Twitter Tools" that can help any business or individual for the readers of Visibility Magazine. We think that you'll find that you get more out of Twitter after reading this article and using some of these great tools.

Internet Advertising Click Fraud on the Rise

USA Today reports that click fraud is becoming more prevalent these days as cybergangs increase the use of "infected PCs to divert advertising dollars into their hands."

According to the article, two separate estimates by Click Forensics and Anchor Intelligence reveal that in the first quarter of 2010 17 percent to 29 percent of clicks to online ads were fraudulent. The estimates represent a 15 percent to 25 percent increase from fourth quarter 2009.

"Most often, click fraud is the work of cybercriminals who put up websites carrying online ads and no other content," said USA Today.

"The criminals then retain the services of cybergangs in control of sprawling networks of infected PCs, called botnets, which are directed to repeatedly click on the ads. This triggers payments to the crooks who put up the Web page."

Click-fraud scammers are responsible for stealing millions of dollars annually, making it an obvious concern for big search companies. For example, Google spokeswoman Rachel Nearnberg told USA Today that the search giant allows advertisers to check for patters of fraudulent clicks. The program allows advertisers to count the exact number of clicks that are filtered out on each ad campaign. Despite their efforts, the article suggests that stopping the criminal activity is difficult to do.

According to the article, more often than not, "advertisers eat the losses."

Google Reveals New Face

Google today launched a new look that features a navigation bar on the left side of the page. Powered by three Google tools—Universal Search, the Search Options panel and Google Squared—the left-hand side navigation bar provides users with a richer search experience that highlights the most relevant search tools and refinements for any particular query.

For example, the Search Options panel allows users to customize search results by suggesting the tools that are most relevant and helpful to the query. The second tool, Google Squared, which is available on Google Labs, helps users locate and compare entities.

Along with the new left-hand side navigation bar, Google has revamped its look and feel. The company updated its color palette and logo. The new logo is free of the heavy drop shadows and the letters seem brightened up a little. The trademark sign has also been removed.

In a post on the Google blog, VP of Search Products & User Experience Marissa Mayer said "Today's changes are the latest in our continuing efforts to evolve and improve Google.

"We've been testing these changes with users over the past few months, and what we're launching today reflects the feedback we've received."

Top Internet Retailers Struggle with ROI for Top SEO Terms

Just because you are a leading retailer doesn't mean that you fully understand SEO best practices. That's the finding of research done by Conductor, a New York-based firm which specializes in measurement and optimization solutions. According to MediaPost.com, Conductor researched the SEO spending and return on investment of the top 500 internet retailers and found that in the vast majority of cases, companies were not getting the results they would want for the keywords they placed the most value in.

According to Conductor's research, the top 500 internet retailers spent roughly $1.2 million per day on almost 90,000 keywords in the last quarter of 2009. But out of the highest-priced keywords, only one-third ranked in the top 50 natural search engine query results.

The results mirrored a similar study done by Conductor of Fortune 500 companies earlier this year. In both cases, long-tail keyword searches showed a downward curve as the length of the keyword phrases increased. According to Nathan Safran, senior research analysts at Conductor, the research points out three things that retailers must do: define and understand opportunities in terms of size and scale, create a plan to execute the strategy and continually compare results with your competitors.

"Too many organizations treat SEO as an after-thought," Safran said. "It needs to be ingrained in the company's culture."

Social Media Marketing Services

elcome to the latest edition of the Submit Express newsletter, where you can find the latest news about our company and the ever-changing worlds of search engine optimization (SEO) and social media. 2009 was one of the most exciting years in Submit Express history: we were honored to be named the Top Search Optimization Firm in 2009 by Website Magazine along with repeat appearances in the Inc. 5,000 and the Deloitte Technology Fast 500. We also became increasingly active in the world of social media through our new iClimber social media service as more companies saw the potential of sites like Facebook and Twitter to connect with prospective customers and clients.

One of our main tasks in 2009 was staying ahead of the changes in the industry. The emergence of Microsoft's Bing search engine and the changes Google made to its Personalized Search function will significantly affect how search engine results are generated and used. As we look ahead to 2010, it's also important to reflect on some of the top search engine-related news stories of the past year and the impact they will have moving forward.

In this issue read about:

Top Search Stories of 2009

June 2009: Microsoft Launches New Bing Search Engine

Microsoft launched its new Bing search engine in June 2009 on the heels of a PR and advertising campaign featuring high-profile TV spots. Microsoft attempted to differentiate Bing from industry giant Google by calling it a "decision engine" rather than a search engine, returning results that were more detailed and precise than Google and therefore providing information to help people make real-world decisions.

According to the official press release, Microsoft focused on three design goals when creating Bing: "deliver great results; deliver a more organized experience; and simplify tasks and provide insight, leading to faster, more confident decisions." Bing offers several features that are unique from Google or Yahoo! search engines, including Related Searches and Quick Tabs, a table of contents for different categories of search results.

While Google remained the dominant search engine, Bing was able to grow its market share throughout 2009, ending the year with more than 1.3 million searches a month.

October 2009: Search Engines Add Real-Time Search Functionality

The increasing popularity of social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook forced search engines to have to address the challenge of real-time searches in 2009. In fact, in the span of one day in October, two of the major search engines announced plans to integrate real-time content from social media sites into their search results.

Bing was the first search engine to announce the integration of Twitter content into its search engine. Google followed up with a similar announcement later that day, adding the rollout of a new Google Labs experiment called Social Search. Through this feature, people conducting Web searches on Google can see results for queries specifically from people in their social network.

December 2009: Google Updates Personalized Search Function

In December 2009, Google released a new version of Personalized Search designed to deliver individual, customized results based on a person's search history. Personalized Search uses information from past searches to deliver results targeted to be the best fit for each individual user. According to a post on the Official Google Blog, one example would be that if a person visits a particular food site frequently, it would be ranked higher in the future when that person does a Google search for recipes.

Previously, Personalized Search had only been available to people who were signed in and had Web History enabled on their Google Accounts. The newest version of Personalized Search extended that feature to all users (even if they were not logged into Google) through their anonymous cookies from the past 180 days.

The announcement caused speculation within the industry about what impact this will have on search engine rankings and the process of optimization. While it is possible that there may be some volatility in search engine rankings in 2010 as the effects of Personalized Search are seen, Chris Boggs of Search Engine Watch feels that basic SEO best practices will still be necessary to ensure a proper search engine ranking.

December 2009: Microsoft and Yahoo! Finalize Partnership

In December 2009 Microsoft and Yahoo! finalized a partnership deal that had been rumored for several months, with Yahoo! using Microsoft's Bing technology to power its search engine in exchange for providing Microsoft with its online ad sales expertise. The two sides reached an agreement in principle in July and later reached out to European Union regulators for permission to combine forces.

Media reports put the deal at ten years, with an expected rollout date for the combined effort in early 2010. According to a joint statement released by the company:

"Microsoft and Yahoo! believe that this deal will create a sustainable and more compelling alternative in search that can provide consumers, advertisers and publishers real choice, better value, and more innovation. Yahoo! and Microsoft welcome the broad support the deal has received from key players in the advertising industry and remain hopeful that the closing of the transaction can occur in early 2010."

Google Threatening to Stop Operations in China

Google is threatening to leave China after a dispute revolving around a cyber attack the search giant says "resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google." According to DailyFinance.com, Google is vowing to end its censorship of its Chinese language search site, a move that would be seen as thumbing its nose at the communist Chinese government.

In a post on the official Google Blog, Google SVP of Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond said that Google had been the victim of a cyber attack that originated from inside of China. However, Drummond also said that Google's intellectual property wasn't the main target of the attack; rather, the hackers appeared to be interested in accessing the Gmail accounts of human rights activists in China. While the attack only compromised two accounts on a limited basis, the subsequent investigation showed that "the accounts of dozens of U.S.-, China- and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties."

According to Drummond, the attacks -- combined with China's efforts to curtail free speech online in the past year -- has led Google to "conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China."

"We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn," he said, "and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China."
